—an excerpt from second novel in progress, Geese.
From Fall 2002, Issue 44 of Glimmer Train Magazine.

My Grandma Hilda often said to my sister Rachel and me that even though it was a sin and a shame that we were born girls, and born to parents who didn't have a red cent and shouldn't have been married in the first place, at least we weren't stupid. That was typical of the way she said things; an insult mixed with a compliment. It left you caught between reactions and therefore unable to react at all. Or she came out with pronouncements that were so blatantly but tactlessly truthful that you were stunned into lying just to protect yourself from the burn of it. Even if it wasn't about you.
